paris is paradise for a foodie. i do not consider myself a real (hardcore) foodie, but i do consider myself almost there. i lo
ve great food and i love letting my tastebuds try new things and making them smile. smile they did this morning. after waking up early and doing some laundry, i went out to this market i have talked about several times, but not yet attended. today that all changed. i thought that i would just wal
k through, maybe pick up an onion or something, and head off to ed to get all of my groceries (cheap food). au contraire, mes amis! this market was just divine. i took one quick lap through it, just to see what i was up against, and then i swung back and wham, did a little damage. i said 'bonjour' to a young man working at a fruit stand, only to be returned with, 'ah, bonjour ma copine.' (hello my girlfriend) (haha) i bought some fresh dates, strawberries,
a pomegranate, and a bunch of bananas from one of his partners in crime, momo, who was so sweet. they had the most beautiful food from all over the world. fresh dates? where in the hell do fresh dates grow? im not so sure about that, but one thing i do kno
w for sure is that they ended up in my stomach today, and my stomach was happy. i stopped at another stand, bought some tomatoes, carrots (they'll even hack off the annoying ends of the carrots for you!), endive, an onion (ha, i did get that onion). bought a big bag of gala apples from a little old man, and even was able to pick up my favorite cheese, port salut, from a huge cheese stand. don't worry, i will venture into the other weird cheeses soon. i just needed some of this orgasmic goodness (sorry mom, but i have had friends describe this cheese as such).
apres le marche, i came home and put my treats away. off to ed i strolled. i was listening to christmas songs just for fun, and as i neared the belleville metro stop, i had one of those moments. i was so happy. my heart felt soooooo happy. everyone at the market was so friendly and just happy to be selling good produce. joy was oozing out of my pores. i continued on to ed, where i explored a bit more. my strange product of the day was a package of turkish delight, as i don't believe i have ever had the powdered-sugary goodness. ed is nice. it is cheap and that's just the way i like it.
but then i had to find my neighborhood monoprix. the girl i am renting from came over yesterday to collect the second month's worth of rent and she made sure to tell me where monoprix is because i had mentioned to my lovely friend marie that i could not find one (marie has been calling this girl because i don't speak great french and she doesnt speak great english - but marie speaks great both). haha, i find my monoprix! i could spend days there. they just have such neat stuff. i bought some lovely candles and some bright red nail polish for this week. i keep seeing these big serving spoons and forks that have the funkiest glass beads for handles. i have not yet decided who will be getting such an item for christmas. perhaps myself...hehe.
after monoprix, i came home and decided that it would be a great time to go out and explore, just prance around and get lost. but here's the thing...i'm starting to feel like shit. and after all my running around this morning, my body didn't feel up to running around anymore (albeit my mind was up for it - well, for awhile at least, i did start to get a little loopy). anyway, off i went to the arts et metiers metro stop. i have been wanting to go and just kick it by the seine, maybe write some postcards. the stop that i got off at is basically a direct shot from the seine. maybe a twenty minute walk, but really only down ONE major street. well, i somehow managed to walk back to the fucking voltaire metro stop, which is way the hell in the wrong direction. the whole time i kept saying to myself, ok, i know exactly where i am, blah blah blah. obviously not. and once i got to voltaire, i decided to just go home and go to bed. i had stopped at a pharmacie and picked up some cough sirop, so i figured i should just take that and crash. and crash i did.
when i woke up, i had some of those strawberries i picked up this morning. perhaps the best strawberries i have ever tasted. when i pulled them out of my fridge, strawberry scent just sprung out at me. they were red through and through. absolutely delicious. where were these from? heaven, i have decided.
